Independent film distribution

March 30, 2011

Just back from a very inspiring 2 day conference celebrating independent film making and 'hybrid' distribution called Seize the Future organised by Sheffield Doc Fest. About 60 documentary film makers from all over the world shared work in progress, pitches and ideas about crowd sourcing (how to get the film made with others) and crowd funding (how to invite followers to become advocates). Sessions led by Peter Broderick and Sandi DuBowski showed USA case studies and best practice. Some yummy examples on global niche audiences loving the same topic and buying into the whole process.

I really loved Helvetica and Note By Note – the making of Steinway L1037.

In summary, how to take risks by

Being strategic
Thinking long-term
Staying flexible
Splitting rights
Targeting audiences
Finding relevant partners
Building a team
Harnessing the internet
Being creative
Making distribution happen
