Pitching

April 5, 2010

Short-listed by Northern Film & Media to make a documentary that captures an aspect of North-East life, 7 of us met to spend a very long but enjoyable day learning about the art of pitching. Our trainer, Christina Burnett of Wide Eye Pictures was warm and welcoming, encouraging us all to be ourselves but stay focused.

The hardest thing seems to be explaining what is it?  Trying to convey everything a commissioner needs to know – title, genre, length, budget etc thereby reducing ‘points of information’ queries – whilst suggesting what you will see on screen – the Director’s voice, is a fine balancing act.  We had 5 minutes and a bell rang after four.

It was really good to hear the range of stories presented and styles of visualising what we haven’t yet filmed.  Trailers, photographs and audio were all used to entice.  A few days later we pitched the polished version to the Community Channel – no bells!
